As you may have learned from the news, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a final rule establishing that over-the-counter (OTC) consumer antiseptic wash products containing certain active ingredients including triclosan and triclocarban can no longer be marketed because manufacturers did not demonstrate that the ingredients are both safe for long-term daily use and more effective than plain soap and water in preventing illness and the spread of certain infections [1].

This final rule applies to consumer antiseptic wash products containing one or more of 19 specific active ingredients, including the most commonly used ingredients – triclosan and triclocarban. These products are intended for use with water, and are rinsed off after use.

Metrex hand hygiene products including VioNexus™ Antimicrobial Foaming Soap, VioNexus™ Foaming Soap with Vitamin E and VioNex™ Antimicrobial Liquid Soap don’t contain any of the 19 specific active ingredients including triclosan and triclocarban that are called out by FDA.

Metrex offers a series of soap and hand hygiene products. According to the CDC [2], keeping our hands clean is one of the best things we can do to keep from getting sick and avoid spreading germs to others. Hand Soaps like VioNexus™ and VioNex™ support hand hygiene best practices. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that all people within all areas of the healthcare environment are properly protected so focus can be placed on getting the patient better.
